Solar Storm
Monday, October 18, 2010 at 8:20PM Solar stormwatchers have been tracking a solar storm launched from the Sun on the 14th October. Analysis of the results shows that this storm, travelling at 244 km per second, will cross Earth’s orbit at 14:43 GMT on the 21st October just ahead of our planet.
Check out http://solarstormwatch.com/ for up to date news. This is not expected to create major issues but it may give some spectacular skies. Forecasting these events has become an interesting topic for popular science but the potential of a storm to cause real problems is significant, and early warning could avoid many major issues - like the disappearance of SatNav for a few days!
